Organization Theory and Design 4th Edition by Richard L. Daft/Ann Armstrong

Overview

Organizations must adapt to changing and often challenging environments. This thoroughly updated fourth Canadian edition helps students understand and design organizations for today’s complex environment. The concepts and models offered in this text are integrated with changing events in the real world, presenting the most recent thinking and providing an up-to-date view of organizations. Detailed Canadian examples and cases capture the richness of the Canadian experience, while international examples accurately represent Canada’s role in the world.

Ann Armstrong

Ann Armstrong has been an instructor at the Rotman School of Management for the past 18 years. She served as the Director of the Social Enterprise Initiative: in that role, she was responsible for increasing the School’s involvement in the non-profit/social enterprise sectors through curriculum design, research, and community engagement. She continues her affiliation with the Rotman School of Management, teaching in the Commerce program. She is also on the faculty of the Institute for Management and Innovation at the University of Toronto, Mississauga. She has co-authored several Canadian editions of a best-selling textbook on organization design with Dr. Richard Daft. As well, she has co-authored a textbook on Canada’s social economy with Drs. Jack Quarter and Laurie Mook. Along with Joan Condie, Ann has adapted, ORGB by Nelson and Quick, for a Canadian audience. Ann is now working on two textbooks as well as on a SSHRC/CURA-funded project on social businesses. Ann received her Ph.D. in organizational behaviour from the University of Toronto. In addition, she sits on several not-for-profit boards and consults principally in the non-profit and public sectors on change management and governance. (One day she hopes to become a comic!)

  • Summary and Interpretation: The Summary and Interpretation section tells students how the chapter points are important in the broader context of organizational theory.
  • Cases for Analysis: These cases are tailored to chapter concepts and provide a vehicle for student analysis and discussion.
